International Co-operative Alliance - International Year of Co-operatives 2012  click here to find out more about the international year
The International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) is an independent, non-governmental organisation that unites, represents and serves co-operatives worldwide. It exists to provide an effective and efficient global voice and forum for knowledge, expertise and co-ordinated action for and about co-operatives.

ICA members are international and national co-operative organisations from all sectors of the economy including agriculture, banking, fisheries, health, housing, industry, insurance and tourism. Currently, the ICA has over 250 member organisations from almost 100 countries, representing approximately 1 billion individuals worldwide. Around 100 million people work for a co-op globally.

United Nations - International Year of Co-ops
The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2012 as the International Year of Cooperatives, highlighting the contribution of cooperatives to socio-economic development, particularly their impact on poverty reduction, employment generation and social integration.  Click the link above to find out more.

ICA Regions
The International Co-operative Alliance is organised into 4 distinct regions, each with its own office and staff team.

CECODHAS 
CECODHAS Housing Europe is the European Federation of Public, Cooperative & Social Housing - a network of 45 national and regional federations which together gather about 41 400 public, voluntary and cooperative housing providers in 19 countries. Altogether they manage over 27 million homes, about 12% of existing dwellings in the EU.

United Nations Economic Commission for Europe
UNECE strives to foster sustainable economic growth among its 56 member countries. As a multilateral platform, UNECE  facilitates greater economic integration and cooperation among its member countries and promotes sustainable development and economic prosperity through:

  • policy dialogue,
  • negotiation of international legal instruments,
  • development of regulations and norms,
  • exchange and application of best practices as well as economic and technical expertise,
  • technical cooperation for countries with economies in transition.

UN-Habitat
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-HABITAT, is the United Nations agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. Rooftops Canada Foundation / Fondation Abri International
Rooftops Canada is the international development program of co-operative and social housing organizations in Canada. Rooftops Canada works with partner organizations to improve housing conditions, build sustainable communities and develop a shared vision of equitable global development. Rooftops Canada's focus is on disadvantaged communities in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and Eastern Europe. More information can be found at their website at: www.rooftops.ca.

The Global News Hub
The Global News Hub from Co-operative News — the world's oldest co-operative newspaper (est. 1871) — features articles about co-operatives around the world and provides an opportunity for the sector to contribute stories.

Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives
COPAC is a committee made up of the cooperative movement and the United Nations and its agencies. Members work together on equal terms to promote and coordinate sustainable cooperative development by promoting and raising awareness on cooperatives, holding policy dialogues and advocating policies that enable cooperative success, working together on technical cooperation activities and sharing knowledge and information.

European Research Institute on Cooperative and Social Enterprises
Euricse (European Research Institute on Cooperative and Social Enterprises) is a research centre designed to promote knowledge development and innovation for the field of cooperatives, social enterprises, commons and nonprofit organizations.

Rochdale Pioneers Museum opening soon!
The Rochdale Pioneers Museum in the UK exists to preserve the original store of the Rochdale Pioneers and to generate an understanding of the ideals and principles of the co-operative movement.
